This month our usual shows are replaced by a special extended edition dedicated to SL8B (Second Life 8th Birthday). The regular crew is joined by Dekka Raymaker and Khamudy Mannonen, and together they explore the event and visit a number of locations, including work by Sanura Sakai & Andel Rhiadra, windyy Lane, Caro Fayray, Eupalinos Ujagin & Simotron Aquila, Madpea Productions, LEA, Shellina Winkler, Claudia222 Jewell, Harter Fall & Elliena Bulmer, and Ub Yifu. During the tour they discuss the history of the event, how the builds relate to this year's theme 'The Magic of SL', the ratio of creative versus commercial ventures, and many other topics.

Arahan also reveals details about the upcoming ArthOle performance at Odyssey.

  1. I enjoyed listening to this episode of Soup Radio. It was fun to hear everyone all together exploring the SL8B plots and to 'see' things through your eyes that would normally be off-radar!

Amy, fox hunting is still very much being done in the USA in areas of the country where there is scenic rural space enough to run horses and hounds. Yes, it's awful, but the tradition continues. Although it's called a fox hunt, it's just as often really a coyote hunt. You can read about it here:

I attended a retreat at the Shaker Village in Kentucky a few years ago, where I met a group of artists who specialize in painting horses and hounds. Despite my aversion to the hunt, I felt like I could not pass up the chance to witness attired riders, thoroughbred horses, and eager dogs at first light of dawn. I stood in a pretty field with a couple of artists and watched the procession come up the trail and jump a couple of white stone walls on their way to the other side of the hill where they disappeared into colorful autumn foliage. It was something I'll never forget, and something I have absolutely no desire to ever do again. They invited me to the special church service for the blessing of the hounds but I declined. The people who own these valuable horses and dogs commission portraits of them.

    Happy birthday Arahan!

  2. Hi there Mab,

I enjoyed doing the show, although we wasted a lot of time at Madpea, not sure why I ever thought playing a point and click adventure game would make for exciting radio! It was great to finally record something together with Amy as that hasn't really happened before apart from a brief exchange during a couple of early BiW podcasts. And thanks to Kham for replacing Nebulosus at short notice, it was good to have him aboard.

I find everything about fox hunting and any bloodsport utterly repellent and completely unjustifiable, all the pomp and ceremony is just a diversion to try to fool people into believing it has something to do with heritage and tradition, when they're just a bunch of vicious, bloodthirsty bastards. But it was most unexpected and bizarre discovering it went on in Second Life, if only it had a chance of replacing real hunting I'd give it my full support.

It's not so much the upper classes that hunt here anymore, plenty of farmers and locals get involved, the Countryside Alliance types, ugly people inside and out.

My SL birthday sucked Mab, but thanks!
